Learn Iqra Online, One-to-One

Iqra is a series of six short books that teaches you to read Arabic letters and, step by step, the Quran. You read aloud from the first page. Each book adds one new thing, such as a new vowel sound or a new way letters join, so you are never asked to learn too much at once.

Our Iqra classes in Singapore are live, online and one-to-one. It is just you (or your child) and the teacher. The teacher listens to every letter you read and corrects it on the spot. That is the part a recorded video or an app can’t do.

Iqra teaches you to read Arabic letters and the Quran correctly. It doesn’t teach spoken Arabic or translation.

These classes are for:

  • Complete beginners who don’t know any Arabic letters yet
  • Children from age 5 with a parent nearby if they like
  • Adults who never had the chance to learn, or who learnt as a child and have since forgotten
  • Students who already started Iqra at a mosque, with another academy or with a private teacher

You don’t always start at Book 1. During the free trial classes, the teacher checks what you can already read, and you start from there.

Iqra Classes for Kids

Children can start Iqra from age 5. Each class is 30 minutes long, with one child and one teacher, so your child gets the teacher’s full attention for the whole lesson.

Young children often mix up letters that look alike, or say a sound a little wrong without noticing. In a one-to-one class the teacher hears it straight away and helps your child say it again correctly. Mistakes get fixed early, before they turn into habits.

For beginners, we generally recommend 5 classes a week. Regular short lessons give young learners more chances to practise and go over what they have learnt. With flexible timings, classes can fit around school, tuition and CCAs: before school, after dinner or at the weekend.

A few things parents usually ask about:

  • Teacher matching: boys can be matched with a male teacher and girls with a female teacher.
  • Sitting in: you are welcome to watch your child’s classes. We encourage parents to stay involved.
  • Knowing how it’s going: a monthly progress report and a monthly test. See how progress reports and monthly tests work.

“My daughter has been taking online Iqra classes and I’m really happy with how she is doing. I can see that she is getting better with her reading and improving day by day. She enjoys her classes and I’m very happy to see her progress.”

Aisha Mohamed, parent, Singapore

Iqra Classes for Adults

It is never too late to learn to read the Quran. Some adults are starting from the alphabet. Others went to Quran classes as children, stopped for years, and now find the letters hard to remember.

Iqra works the same way for adults as it does for children. You begin with single letters, and you only move on when you can read the page with confidence. In a one-to-one class, no one else is listening while you learn, and you never have to keep up with a group. The teacher goes at your speed.

Not sure Iqra is the right place to start? Our Quran classes for adults page explains every option, from the Arabic letters to Tajweed, memorising and Tafsir.

  • Choose your teacher: men can choose a male teacher, and women can choose a female teacher.
  • Fit it around work: with flexible timings in Singapore Time, early mornings, lunch breaks and late evenings all work.
  • Lessons in English: explanations are in English. The reading itself is in Arabic.
  • Same checks as the children: a monthly progress report and a monthly test.

“I have learned a lot from my Iqra classes. The lessons are easy to follow and I feel that my reading is getting better with each class. I’m happy with what I’ve learned so far and would like to keep improving.”

Ahmed Faizal, Iqra student, Bugis, Singapore

Iqra Books 1–6: What You Learn at Each Level

We teach all six Iqra books. You get the book as a PDF, so you can follow the same page as your teacher during class and look back at it between lessons. The list below follows the standard six-book Iqra series. Printings can differ slightly, and your teacher works from the PDF we share with you.

  • Iqra 1Each Arabic letter on its own, read with fathah (the short “a” sound)
  • Iqra 2Letters joined together at the start, middle and end of a word, still with fathah
  • Iqra 3Two more short vowels: kasrah (“i”) and dammah (“u”)
  • Iqra 4Tanween, sukoon (a letter with no vowel) and qalqalah (the slight bounce on certain letters)
  • Iqra 5The different forms of alif lam, and idgham (merging one sound into the next)
  • Iqra 6Iqlab and ikhfa, and waqf, which covers where and how to pause when reading

The later books already bring in some basic Tajweed, so students learn to read correctly as well as fluently. After Book 6, students move on to reading from the Quran itself.

Already Started Iqra Somewhere Else?

Some children in Singapore start Iqra at a mosque or a weekend class, and later the timing stops working for the family. You don’t have to start again. The teacher listens to your child read during the free trial classes, checks which book and page suits them, and they carry on from there. The same applies to adults who stopped partway through.

Prefer Noorani Qaida? Noorani Qaida Classes for Beginners

We also teach online Noorani Qaida classes, with the same teachers who teach Iqra. Some families in Singapore have already started it, or a teacher has suggested it. If that is you, you can keep going with it here.

Noorani Qaida is a single beginner book. It starts with the Arabic letters, then moves on to joined letters, and it is colour-coded to help students spot sounds and patterns. We share it as a PDF, just like Iqra.

If your child has already started it with another teacher or academy, they can continue from where they stopped. Iqra and Noorani Qaida are both beginner books that lead to reading the Quran, so either one is a good place to start. You can pick the one you prefer, or let the teacher suggest one after hearing the student read.

You get 3 free trial classes, each 30 minutes long. There is no charge and nothing hidden. Message us on WhatsApp to book them.

During the trial, the teacher hears you or your child read and works out where to begin: Book 1, a later Iqra book, or the page you reached somewhere else.

3. Choose your days and times

Classes run 24/7, so you can pick times that suit you in Singapore Time. Each class is 30 minutes.

4. Join from home

Classes take place on Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams, whichever you already use. The Iqra book is shared as a PDF, so you don’t need anything else.

“My 6-year-old son has been taking online Iqra classes and he has improved a lot. He is reading better now and is more confident with his Iqra. I’m happy with his progress and it’s nice to see him getting better with his classes.”

Your Iqra Teachers

Every one of our teachers holds an Ijazah with Sanad. An Ijazah is a formal authorisation from a qualified teacher confirming that a student’s Quran recitation has been assessed. A Sanad records the chain of teachers through whom that recitation has been passed down.

Our teachers have experience teaching both children and adults online, from five-year-olds learning their first letters to adults who haven’t opened an Iqra book in years.

  • Male and female teachers are available.
  • All lessons are taught in English.
  • If a teacher isn’t the right fit, you can ask to change.

Every teacher at the academy teaches Iqra. Here are four of them:

Qari Imran, Quran teacher

Qari Imran

Hifz-ul-Quran (1995). Teaching since 2000.

Qari Hassan, Quran teacher

You can read more about our academy and meet all our teachers.

Progress Reports, Monthly Tests and Make-Up Classes

The teacher keeps track of each student’s progress through the Iqra books. Once a month, students sit a test. You also get a monthly progress report showing how they are doing. This applies to adults as well as children.

Parents can watch their child’s lessons. You don’t need to sit through every class, but seeing a lesson now and then helps you understand what your child is practising and how you can help at home. For the first lessons, you can print our free Arabic alphabet chart and practise the letters together.

Missed a class? Make-up classes have no limit. They are arranged on a day when you don’t have a regular class.

What Comes After Iqra?

  • Iqra Books 1–6
  • Quran reading with Tajweed
  • Hifz (memorising the Quran)

Iqra is the first step. Once students finish the books and can read Quran verses on their own, the next step is Quran reading with Tajweed. There, they read longer passages, apply the rules properly and build fluency. Some students later go on to memorise the Quran in our online Tahfiz (Hifz) classes.

How quickly someone moves from Iqra to the Quran depends on where they started, how often they attend and how much they practise between lessons. The Iqra course usually takes at least 6 months. We won’t promise a finish date, because every student is different.

Iqra Classes FAQs

Can complete beginners join if they don’t know any Arabic letters?

Yes. Iqra Book 1 starts with single Arabic letters, so you don’t need to know anything beforehand. You also don’t need to understand Arabic. Iqra teaches you to read the letters and sounds correctly, not to translate them.

What age can my child start Iqra?

From age 5. At that age, a 30-minute one-to-one class works well because the teacher can keep the lesson moving and adjust it to your child.

Can adults learn Iqra from the very beginning?

Yes. Adults start from Book 1 if they need to, in private one-to-one classes. Men can choose a male teacher and women can choose a female teacher.

Can I continue from the Iqra level I studied at a mosque or with another teacher?

Yes. During the free trial classes, the teacher checks your reading and you continue from the right book and page. There’s no need to start over.

Do you also teach Noorani Qaida?

Yes. We teach it online, with the same teachers. It is a single colour-coded book covering the Arabic letters and joined letters, and we share it as a PDF. See the section above.

My child started Noorani Qaida elsewhere. Can they continue here?

Yes. The teacher checks where your child has reached during the trial classes, and they carry on from that point.

How long does it take to complete Iqra?

The Iqra course usually takes at least 6 months. The exact time depends on the starting level, attendance and practice, so we don’t promise a fixed finish date.

How long is each class, and how many classes a week do you recommend?

Each class is 30 minutes. We recommend 5 classes a week, because regular short practice helps students remember what they learnt.

How much do Iqra classes cost?

Fees are SGD 35–50 a month. There is no registration fee, and the first 3 classes are free.

What do we need for class, and do we need to buy the Iqra book?

A phone, tablet or computer with a microphone and a stable internet connection is enough. Classes run on Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams. You don’t need to buy the book, because we share it as a PDF.

Can I choose a male or female teacher?

Yes. Boys can be matched with male teachers and girls with female teachers. Adult men and women can choose a teacher of the same gender.

What qualifications do your teachers have?

All our teachers hold an Ijazah with Sanad and have experience teaching online. More about our teachers.

How will I know my child is making progress?

The teacher tracks progress through the books. Your child sits a test every month, and you receive a monthly progress report.

Can parents watch their child’s lessons?

Yes. Parents can watch their child’s classes, and we encourage it.

What happens if we miss a class?

You can have a make-up class on a day when you don’t have a regular class. There is no limit on make-up classes.

How do the 3 free trial classes work?

You get 3 free classes, each 30 minutes long. The teacher assesses your level and shows you how lessons work. There are no charges, and you decide afterwards whether to continue.
