Quran Classes for Adults, Online and One-to-One

Our Quran classes for adults in Singapore are one-to-one. There’s no group to keep up with. It’s just you and your teacher, live on screen, for the whole lesson.

This suits adults well, because every adult starts from a different place. Some learned a little as children and then stopped. Some never had the chance to learn. Some have recently become Muslim. Your teacher starts where you are and goes at your speed.

So far, 27 adult students have completed a course with us.

Lessons are in English. You don’t need to know Arabic to learn to read the Quran. Reading comes first, and if you want to understand the meaning later, that’s a separate class.

You choose the days and the time, in Singapore Time. Many adults take their class before work, in a lunch break or after the children are asleep.

Which Quran Class Is Right for You?

Most adults fit into one of these. Not sure which one is you? Your teacher will hear you read in the first free class and tell you where to start.

Starting from the Arabic Letters

If you can’t read Arabic letters yet, you’ll start with the Iqra books. They begin with single letters and slowly build up to words and short verses. New Muslims start here too, and the teacher explains every sound in English.

Reading the Quran, but Unsure of Your Tajweed

You can read, but you know some letters aren’t right, or you never learned the rules properly. The teacher listens, fixes your pronunciation and teaches the rules in the verses you read.

Memorising the Quran as an Adult

Adults can memorise a few surahs or the whole Quran. Most begin with Juz ‘Amma, which has the short surahs we recite in prayer. These classes are 1 hour.

Understanding the Meaning of What You Recite

Once you can read the Quran, you may want to know what it means. Tafsir classes go through the Quran ayah by ayah, explained in English.

Learning with a Female Teacher

Women are taught only by our female teachers, and all of them are Hafiza. You can take any of the classes above with a female teacher.

How Adults Learn the Quran

Adults learn the Quran best by reading aloud to a teacher who corrects them straight away, in short classes a few times a week. The teacher reads, you repeat, and a mistake gets fixed before it turns into a habit. Learning face to face with a teacher like this is called talaqqi.

Short classes often work better than one long class a week. Five 30-minute lessons give you five chances to read and be corrected, and there’s less time to forget in between. Two or three days a week is fine too. You’ll just move a bit slower.

Between classes, read over the day’s lesson for a few minutes. It makes a real difference.

Once a month you take a short test, and you get a progress report.

How Long Does It Take an Adult to Learn?

These are typical times at 5 classes a week. Your own time depends on where you start, how often you come and how much you practise. We don’t promise a finish date.

StageTypical timeWhat you can do at the end
Iqra
You can’t read Arabic letters yet
Usually at least 6 monthsRead Quran words and short verses on your own
Reading the whole Quran (nazra)
You’ve finished Iqra
About 1 year after IqraRead the Quran from start to finish
Tajweed basics
You can read, but with mistakes
About 4 monthsUse the main Tajweed rules when you recite
Memorising Juz ‘Amma
You can read well
About 2.5 to 3 monthsRecite the short surahs of Juz 30 from memory

A good first goal for many adults is reading Al-Fatihah and the short surahs they pray with correctly. You’ll usually get there early on. Once you can read fluently, our khatam Quran guide shows how to plan your first full reading.

Common Worries Adults Have

“Am I Too Old to Start?”

No. There’s no upper age limit. Our adult students range from 18 into their 50s, and some of them started from the very first letter.

The hard part for most adults isn’t age. It’s feeling awkward about getting things wrong. In a one-to-one class nobody else is listening, and your teacher has taught plenty of adults before you.

“I Learned as a Child but Have Forgotten”

This is one of the most common reasons adults message us. Maybe you remember some letters, or you read slowly and make mistakes you can’t fix on your own.

You don’t have to start again from zero. In the free classes, the teacher hears you read and picks the right starting point. That might be a later Iqra book, the Quran itself, or Tajweed lessons to fix old habits.

“I Feel Shy Reading in Front of Someone”

That’s normal, and it’s a big reason adults choose one-to-one classes. Only your teacher hears you read. Mistakes are part of learning, and fixing them is the teacher’s job, not something to be embarrassed about.

Women learn only with a female teacher and can keep their camera off.

“I’m 24 and joined to work on my Tajweed. I didn’t feel confident reading the Quran, and I was too shy to sign up at an institute. Learning online, from home and at a time that fits my schedule, took that pressure away. When I make a mistake, my teacher corrects me kindly and patiently. I’m slowly getting more confident, and I’m glad I took the step.”

“I Don’t Have Time with Work and Family”

A class can be as short as 30 minutes, 2 days a week. You pick the days and the time, so it fits around your job and your family. Early morning, a lunch break or late evening are all fine.

Missed a class? You can take a make-up class on a day you don’t normally have one. There’s no limit on make-up classes.

“With the kids and the housework, I could never get to a class, even though I’d always wanted to read the Quran properly. Now I learn from home whenever my routine allows. If I get stuck, my teacher is patient and helps me through it. I’m happy I can finally learn the Quran and still look after my family.”

Hana Abdullah, Singapore

What an Online Class Looks Like

You join from home on a phone, tablet or laptop. You need a microphone and a steady internet connection. A headset helps you hear each other clearly, but you don’t have to have one. Classes run on Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams, whichever you already use.

You don’t need to buy books. The teacher shares the Iqra book or the Quran page on screen, so you both look at the same line.

In class, the teacher reads, you repeat, and then you read by yourself while the teacher listens. If a word isn’t right, the teacher asks you to say it again until it is. At the end you usually get a short part to read over before next time.

  • Recordings: classes are recorded for quality checks. Recordings of women’s classes are reviewed only by our female staff, and you can ask us not to record your classes. The Privacy Policy explains how recordings are kept.
  • Changing teacher: if you’d like a different teacher, just tell us.
  • Progress: a short test every month and a monthly progress report.

What to Check Before Choosing an Online Quran Teacher

Whoever you learn with, these are fair things to ask:

  • Can you see who the teacher is, with a name and a real profile?
  • Does the teacher listen to you read and correct you, or mostly talk?
  • Can a woman learn with a female teacher?
  • Are the fees clear, with no surprise registration fee?
  • Can you try a few classes before you pay?
  • How will you know you’re making progress?

What Adult Students Say

“I’d wanted to improve my Quran reading for a long time, but I kept putting it off. Now, after a busy day, I don’t have to go anywhere. I just join the class from home. My teacher is patient and picks up my mistakes as I read. It feels good to finally be doing something I’ve wanted to do for so long.”

Online Class or Mosque Class: Which Suits You?

Mosques and Islamic centres in Singapore run good Quran classes for adults, including group classes and Quran clinics. An online one-to-one class is a different way to learn, not a replacement. Here’s how they usually differ.

If you like learning with other people and the class times work for you, a mosque class is a good choice. If your week is hard to plan, or you’d rather read without anyone else listening, one-to-one may suit you better. Some people do both.

Quran Classes for Adults: FAQs

Do I need to know Arabic to learn to read the Quran?

No. Reading the Quran means learning the letters, sounds and rules, not translating them. Lessons are in English. If you later want to understand the meaning, you can join our Tafsir classes.

I can’t read any Arabic letters. Can I still join?

Yes. You’ll start with Iqra Book 1, which begins with single letters. Many of our adult students started there.

How long does it take an adult to learn to read the Quran?

At 5 classes a week, Iqra usually takes at least 6 months. Reading the whole Quran then takes about a year. It depends on where you start, how often you come and how much you practise.

Can I learn the Quran by myself or with an app?

Apps and recordings are good for practice. But to read correctly, you need someone to hear you and point out the mistakes you can’t hear yourself. That’s what the teacher does in every class.

Can the teacher hear my pronunciation properly online?

Yes. With a working microphone the teacher hears each word clearly. A headset helps if your home is noisy. If something isn’t clear, the teacher asks you to say it again.

Do you teach new Muslims?

Yes. New Muslims can start from the Arabic letters with a patient teacher, at their own speed, with everything explained in English.

Can women learn with a female teacher?

Yes. Women are taught only by our female teachers, and you can keep your camera off.

How much do Quran classes for adults cost?

SGD 35–50 a month for 30-minute classes and SGD 50–70 a month for 1-hour classes, depending on how many days a week you learn. There’s no registration fee.

Are there free Quran classes for adults?

Your first 3 classes are free, and no payment details are needed for them. After that, classes are paid monthly.

What’s the difference between a Quran reading class and a Tajweed class?

A reading class teaches you to read the Arabic text smoothly. A Tajweed class is about saying each letter correctly and following the rules of recitation. Most adults go from one to the other, and your teacher will tell you which one you need.

How much should I practise between classes?

A few minutes each day reading over your lesson is enough to help. A little every day works better than one long session the night before class.

Do you teach in Malay?

No. Our classes are taught in English.
